Bhogavarali is a Carnatic janya raga related to the Varali family of ragas. Varali itself is derived from Tanarupi (melakarta #6) — one of the oldest and most revered Carnatic ragas — and employs notes Sa, R1 (komal Re), G1 (komal Ga), M2 (tivra Ma), Pa, D1 (komal Dha), and N2 (shuddha Ni). The note-set of Tanarupi (#6) does not correspond cleanly to any of the ten Bhatkhande thaats used in Hindustani music: the combination of tivra Ma (M2) with shuddha Ni (N2) places it between Todi (which has komal Ni) and no standard Hindustani thaat, hence the thaat is given as '—'. Bhogavarali likely employs a pentatonic or hexatonic derivation of Varali's parent scale, dropping one or two notes while retaining Varali's characteristic plaintive, devotional quality. The raga is rarely performed in modern Carnatic concert settings and has no documented film or recorded history.
