Raag Bangala ('of Bengal' or 'Bengalee') is a Carnatic janya raag whose name reflects the long history of musical exchange between South India and Bengal. Historical records show that Bengal-based musicians, traders, and court employees traveled to South Indian courts (particularly Vijayanagara and Tanjavur) from the medieval period onward, and vice versa, carrying musical ideas across regions. In Carnatic raga taxonomy, ragas named after North Indian regions (Bangala, Kannada, Gujri, Sindhura) document this cross-regional movement of melodic ideas. The raag Bangala may encode a melodic inflection associated with Bengali folk or classical music — possibly the characteristic flat notes of Kharaharapriya (Kafi thaat) that appear in many Bengali forms, or the Bhairav-type scale associated with Bengal's Baul and Baul-adjacent traditions. However, without confirmed arohana-avarohana, the exact scale and parent melakarta remain uncertain.
