The second connects to 'Balabhadra' or 'Balabhi', an old Indian city mentioned in ancient texts (modern Junagadh region, Gujarat), which served as a seat of Buddhist learning — the Valabhi University rivaled Nalanda before its destruction in the 8th century CE. If the raga's name derives from this geographic reference, it may be one of the ragas that encode historical memory of pre-Islamic Indian urban centers, a phenomenon known in some regional raga-name traditions. Carnatic taxonomy does not typically carry such geographic-historicist naming conventions as prominently as the older Dhrupad tradition, but exceptions exist.
