Raag Annal is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition.. With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Peace/Tranquility (शांत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke peaceful, meditative emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance

Annal is a Carnatic janya raga whose name in Tamil means 'ruler,' 'lord,' or 'the honored one' (from 'annal' அண்ணல் — a respectful address for a great being or deity). In Tamil devotional literature, 'Annal' is used as an honorific for Rama, Shiva, and other deities, placing this raga within a strongly devotional naming tradition. YouTube documentation connects a performance attributed to this raga with Shanmukhapriya, the 56th melakarta (Sa Ri2 Ga2 Ma2 Pa Da1 Ni2). Shanmukhapriya features a characteristic tivra Madhyam (raised fourth) combined with other shuddha-tending swaras, giving it a complex quality that does not correspond cleanly to a single Hindustani thaat — the tivra Ma (Ma2) is associated with Kalyan thaat but the remaining notes do not match Kalyan or any other single Hindustani thaat cleanly. If the Shanmukhapriya connection is confirmed, the thaat equivalent remains ambiguous. No Hindustani thaat assignment is possible without verified swaras of Annal itself.

More to Know

In Film Music

Annal is a Carnatic raga with devotional Tamil associations that has not been documented in Hindi film music. If its Shanmukhapriya (56th melakarta) connection is accurate, it shares a tonal space used by Tamil and Telugu film composers for dramatic and devotional moods — Shanmukhapriya itself has appeared in South Indian film compositions. However, Annal as a distinct raga in its own right has not been identified in any film score. The raga's name's royal and divine connotations have not translated into film-music usage.
