Historical Significance

Anangadhari is a Carnatic janya rāga whose name means 'bearer of Ananga' or 'one who holds Ananga (Kamadeva)' (ananga = the bodiless one, an epithet of Kamadeva, the god of love; dhārī = one who carries or holds). In Hindu mythology, Kamadeva was burnt to ash by Shiva's third eye and became 'ananga' — the bodiless god of love. The rāga's name therefore carries an association with desire, longing, and the bittersweet quality of love — thematic material common to many Carnatic compositions in the Shringar (romantic) tradition. The parent melakarta and swaras are not confirmed in widely available references. This raag belongs to a class of Carnatic janya ragas named after mythological figures and narratives that became popular during the bhakti period of South Indian music.
