Historical Significance

Raag Aimukham takes its name from the Tamil-Sanskrit compound 'ai' (five) and 'mukham' (face), meaning 'five-faced' — a direct reference to the Panchamukha (five-faced) form of Lord Shiva, revered in Tamil Shaivite tradition at temples such as Panchamukha Parameshvara at Thiruvanmiyur. The five faces of Shiva (Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha, Ishana) represent the five cosmic functions and five elements. As a devotional Carnatic janya raag named after this divine form, Aimukham belongs to the rich tradition of raags composed in honor of Shaiva iconography. Its parent melakarta cannot be confirmed from published Carnatic treatises for this enrichment pass. The raag has no presence in North Indian or Hindi film music.
