History

HMV is not a separate company — it is the face of The Gramophone Company itself, the same lineage and the same vault; the full corporate history is recorded under 'The Gramophone Company' entry. The story begins with a painting: artist Francis Barraud painted his late brother's dog Nipper peering into a horn, as if recognising his master's voice. The Gramophone Company bought the painting in 1899, and from 1909 'His Master's Voice' began appearing on its record labels. In India that dog-and-trumpet became a household mark — from Saigal's thumris to the Lata–Rafi film 78s and on through the LP and cassette eras, the mainstream of Hindi music flowed for decades under the HMV insignia. Indians even called the record player itself 'an HMV'. The parent merged into EMI in 1931; the Indian unit later traded as The Gramophone Company of India, was bought by the RPG Group in 1985, and was renamed Saregama in 2000. The brand changed, the vault did not — the original masters from Gauhar Jaan to Kishore Kumar rest with Saregama today, and Nipper's image remains a permanent emblem of India's musical memory.

Era Dominance

From the 1930s to the 1980s HMV was synonymous with Hindi film music — on 78rpm, then LPs and EPs, then cassettes; the same dog-and-trumpet label sat in every collection from wedding trousseaus to radio stations. Its dominance stayed nearly unbroken until T-Series rose in the cassette era.

Artists Roster

Under the HMV umbrella were recorded K.L. Saigal, Pankaj Mullick, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey — virtually the entire front rank of the playback era.
