कथा-सार
Synopsisरंगून का रहने वाला प्रेम कुमार अपने भाई की रहस्यमय मौत और ख़ानदानी विरासत — अजगर की नक़्क़ाशी वाली बेशक़ीमती निशानी — की चोरी का सुराग़ ढूँढने 'राकेश' बनकर कलकत्ता आता है। हावड़ा ब्रिज के साये में बसी यह दुनिया बंदरगाह के गोदामों, चाइनाटाउन की तंग गलियों और रात के क्लबों की है, जहाँ हर चेहरा कोई न कोई राज़ छुपाए है। होटल के क्लब में गाने वाली ख़ूबसूरत एडना से राकेश की मुलाक़ात होती है, और तस्करों के सरगना प्यारेलाल तथा उसके गुर्गों की साज़िशों के बीच दोनों का प्यार परवान चढ़ता है। शक के घेरे, धोखे और क़त्ल की इस कहानी में राकेश को भाई के क़ातिलों तक पहुँचना है — और एडना को यह तय करना है कि वह किस तरफ़ है। शक्ति सामंत ने अपराध-थ्रिलर के हॉलीवुड ढाँचे को कलकत्ता की देसी रौनक़ से भर दिया: कैबरे, क्लब, बंदरगाह और ओ.पी. नय्यर की धड़कती धुनें। मधुबाला के करियर की सबसे दिलकश भूमिकाओं में से एक और अशोक कुमार की सधी हुई अदाकारी ने इसे 1958 की यादगार हिट बना दिया।

Shakti Samanta poured Calcutta's native glamour into a Hollywood-style crime-thriller frame: cabarets, clubs, the docks, and O.P. Nayyar's pulsing score. With Madhubala in one of her most bewitching roles and Ashok Kumar in assured form, Howrah Bridge became one of the memorable hits of 1958.

The Howrah Bridge score is one of the founding pillars of club and cabaret music in Hindi cinema. 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo' in Geeta Dutt's voice made an overnight star of the dancer Helen — the lineage of the Hindi film cabaret queen begins here. 'Aaiye Meherbaan', sung by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Madhubala, became the most famous gesture of invitation in Hindi film — to this day a byword for seduction and welcome. The cocktail O.P. Nayyar mixed here of western swing, Latin rhythm and desi melody lifted his partnership with Asha Bhosle to a new peak, with Qamar Jalalabadi's playful lyrics dissolved into the glitter. Composers borrowed this club-music legacy for decades afterwards.
