Biography

Qamar Jalalabadi, born Om Prakash Bhandari on 9 March 1917, grew up in a Punjabi family in the village of Jalalabad near Beas in Amritsar district. He began writing Urdu poetry at the age of seven; a wandering poet named Amar Chand Amar recognised his talent and gave him the pen name "Qamar" (moon), to which "Jalalabadi" was later added for his hometown. Hoping to break into the film industry, he moved to Pune in the early 1940s.

He made his debut as a lyricist in 1942 with the Pancholi Pictures production Zamindar, whose songs — including Shamshad Begum's "Duniya Mein Gharibon Ko Aaram Nahi Milta" — were well received. He subsequently relocated to Bombay, where he worked as a lyricist for nearly four decades, writing roughly 700 songs across about 156 films. He collaborated with composers such as S. D. Burman and Sardar Malik, and his lyrics were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Talat Mahmood, Geeta Dutt, Mukesh, and Manna Dey, among others. The 1958 film Howrah Bridge marked a career peak, with his songs "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" and "Aaiye Meherbaan" becoming major hits.

He was a founder member of the Film Writers' Association and the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) in Bombay, and later wrote the title track for the television serial Vikram Aur Betaal. Qamar Jalalabadi died on 9 January 2003.
