Overview

'Hriday Mein Moorti Jiski Hai' is described by the researchers who recovered it as the theme song of Lakharani (1945), the Prabhat Film Company picture in which Guru Dutt made his acting debut. It is sung by an unidentified female voice with a female chorus, set to Qamar Jalalabadi's words and Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar's music. Only the audio survives; no print of the film is known, so how the number was staged is unknown. The recording reached the internet only in July 2025, on the centenary of Guru Dutt's birth.

The Music

The surviving recording is built as call and response — a lead female voice answered by a female chorus — which is the shape of a Marathi Sangeet Natak devotional chorus rather than of a mid-1940s Bombay film duet. That is entirely in character for Master Krishnarao, a Hindustani classical vocalist and stage composer who came to films from the musical theatre and never adopted the folk-and-rhythm manner that composers like Naushad were making dominant in exactly these years.

The Poetry

Qamar Jalalabadi's lyric works on the one image the film's whole argument rests on: the idol a devotee carries inside, set against the building the devotee is barred from. The singer speaks for a community of worshippers whose queen is arriving to worship, calls her companions towards the temple, names the small offerings each of them brings, and finally asks the god who lives inside the temple to step instead into their eyes and be seen. The poem never argues the reform case directly; it simply keeps insisting that the deity already lives in the poor devotee's heart, which makes the locked door absurd.

The Story

Lakharani was written and directed by Vishram Bedekar for Prabhat, Poona, on the temple-entry question. Durga Khote plays Bichwa, queen of a devout community treated as untouchable and kept out of every temple; her daughter Lakharani is excommunicated for marrying into a neighbouring community of unbelievers, and the resulting conflict is finally settled when God appears on earth and the bar on temple entry falls. Guru Dutt, newly arrived at Prabhat from Uday Shankar's dance academy in Almora, played Lakharani's brother Lachman and assisted Bedekar on the direction. As the film's theme song, this number carries the central premise of that plot.

The Legacy

For eighty years this song existed only as an entry in Hindi Film Geet Kosh. Lakharani flopped, its prints were lost and its records fell out of circulation entirely; when the first Lakharani song was written up online in 2017, the researcher had to borrow it from a private collector because nothing was available anywhere. This recording surfaced eight years later and was published on 9 July 2025, the hundredth anniversary of Guru Dutt's birth — a small illustration of how the recovery of pre-Independence film music now depends on anniversaries, collectors and the back catalogue uploads of the record company.

Hindi Film Geet Kosh lists the record number for this song but no singer, and the female voice on the surviving audio has still not been identified.
