Set in the freedom struggle period, Shaheed follows Ram (Dilip Kumar), a young idealist who joins the independence movement and becomes a revolutionary martyr. His love for Kasturi (Kamini Kaushal) is sacrificed to the larger cause. The film captures the emotional texture of the independence generation — the romance and the sacrifice entwined — in a year when the nation was barely one year old and the martyrs of the freedom struggle were still recent memory.

Ghulam Haider's score synthesises Punjabi folk melody with Hindustani classical structure — a farewell gift from the man who had also discovered Lata Mangeshkar. Rajkumari and other leading singers of the era perform.
