Chunariya belongs to those Bombay social films of independent India's first year whose prints and story material are all but lost to time — the film survives today chiefly through its music. This was the moment when composers and lyricists uprooted from Lahore by Partition were redrawing the map of Bombay film music. Hansraj Behl, the Punjab-born composer who had been finding his feet in Bombay since 1946, scored the film, and the words came from Arzoo Lucknowi, a master of the older Urdu poetic tradition. The title — Chunariya, the bridal veil-cloth — comes from that folk image which in Hindi song has always stood for the heroine's heart, modesty and adornment. The film's greatest claim in history is that with its song 'Sawaan Aaya', the teenaged Asha Bhosle took her first step in Hindi cinema as a playback singer. In that sense Chunariya is the birthplace of an epoch-making event in Hindi film music, even if the film itself has slipped into oblivion.

Chunariya matters for a historic first: with its song 'Sawaan Aaya', Asha Bhosle began her playback career in Hindi films — the voice that would remain Hindi music's most many-coloured for the next seven decades. The chance came from Hansraj Behl, one of the forerunners of the Punjabi school of composers rising after Partition, later known for his folk-flavoured scores. The meeting of Arzoo Lucknowi's polished pen with Behl's plain, true melodies documents that moment of transition in the late 1940s when Hindi film music was passing from the studio-era singing star into the new age of playback.

The film itself has slipped from circulation, as most of 1948's releases have; its music survives in archives and collector lists — a reminder that in early Hindi cinema the songs routinely outlived the films that carried them.
