कथा-सार
Synopsisएक निडर अख़बार संपादक की हत्या से बम्बई सनसनी में है। जाँच की कमान सी.आई.डी. के तेज़-तर्रार इंस्पेक्टर शेखर के हाथ आती है, मगर शहर के रसूख़दार अपराधी जाल इतने गहरे हैं कि सुराग़ों के पीछे भागता शेखर ख़ुद ही साज़िश में फँसता चला जाता है — उस पर हिरासत में एक गवाह की हत्या का इल्ज़ाम मढ़ दिया जाता है। एक तरफ़ है रेखा, जिससे शेखर का दिल जुड़ा है, और दूसरी तरफ़ रहस्यमयी कामिनी, जो अपराधियों की दुनिया से आई है मगर जिसका ज़मीर अभी ज़िंदा है। फँसे हुए इंस्पेक्टर को क़ानून से भागते हुए ही असली क़ातिल तक पहुँचना है। राज खोसला ने गुरु दत्त की छत्रछाया में बम्बई की रातों, नियॉन रोशनी और साये-धूप से बुना ऐसा नॉयर थ्रिलर रचा जो हॉलीवुड जितना चुस्त और पूरी तरह हिंदुस्तानी था। देव आनंद की फुर्तीली शोख़ी, जॉनी वॉकर की कॉमेडी और ओ.पी. नय्यर के झूमते गीतों ने इस अपराध-कथा को 1956 की सबसे बड़ी हिट फ़िल्मों में पहुँचा दिया — और 'ये है बम्बई मेरी जान' को शहर का तराना बना दिया।

Bombay is rocked by the murder of a fearless newspaper editor. The investigation lands with the sharp C.I.D. Inspector Shekhar — but the city's powerful criminal web runs so deep that the pursuing officer is himself ensnared, framed for the death of a witness in custody. On one side is Rekha, the woman he loves; on the other the mysterious Kamini, a woman from the underworld whose conscience is still alive. The hunted inspector must reach the real killer while on the run from his own law. Under Guru Dutt's mentorship, Raj Khosla wove Bombay's nights, neon and chiaroscuro into a noir thriller as taut as Hollywood and entirely Indian. Dev Anand's quicksilver charm, Johnny Walker's comedy and O.P. Nayyar's swinging songs carried this crime story to the top rank of 1956's hits — and made 'Ye Hai Bombay Meri Jaan' the city's anthem.

सी.आई.डी. का संगीत हिंदी सिनेमा के सबसे चहकते शहरी साउंडट्रैक्स में गिना जाता है। जॉनी वॉकर पर फ़िल्माया 'ये है बम्बई मेरी जान' (रफ़ी–गीता दत्त) बम्बई शहर का अनौपचारिक तराना बन गया — महानगर के मोह और छल पर इससे चुटीली टिप्पणी आज तक नहीं लिखी गई। 'लेके पहला पहला प्यार' और 'आँखों ही आँखों में इशारा हो गया' जैसे गीतों में ओ.पी. नय्यर की लचकती ताल और शमशाद बेग़म-आशा भोसले-रफ़ी की आवाज़ों का जादू है। 'कहीं पे निगाहें कहीं पे निशाना' में शमशाद की खनक नॉयर के रहस्य में घुल जाती है। यह फ़िल्म वहीदा रहमान का हिंदी पर्दे पर पहला क़दम थी और राज खोसला की निर्देशकीय पहचान भी — दोनों विरासतें इसके संगीत जितनी ही स्थायी निकलीं।

The C.I.D. score is counted among Hindi cinema's most effervescent urban soundtracks. 'Ye Hai Bombay Meri Jaan' (Rafi–Geeta Dutt), picturised on Johnny Walker, became Bombay's unofficial anthem — no wittier line on the metropolis's charm and deceit has been written since. In 'Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar' and 'Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara Ho Gaya' you hear O.P. Nayyar's lilting rhythm and the magic of Shamshad Begum, Asha Bhosle and Rafi; in 'Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana', Shamshad's ring dissolves into noir mystery. The film was Waheeda Rehman's first step on the Hindi screen and the making of Raj Khosla as a director — legacies as durable as its music.
