Synopsisजयंत देसाई द्वारा निर्देशित 1943 की एक सामाजिक प्रेम-कथा — एक सीधे-सादे, नेकदिल युवक की कहानी जो प्रेम में पड़ता है पर पारिवारिक मजबूरियों के चलते अपनी प्रेमिका से बिछड़ जाता है, और फ़िल्म के अंत में लौटकर उसे अब भी अपनी प्रतीक्षा में पाता है। इस सरल मेलोड्रामा ने सी. रामचंद्र के एक उल्लेखनीय आरंभिक संगीत को ढाँचा दिया, जब वे अपने महान बॉम्बे करियर की दहलीज़ पर थे।

C. Ramchandra's score leans on the singer-actor tradition of the period, with Kaushalya carrying several of the film's solos and duets and Ishwarlal handling the male numbers. The lyrics are shared across four poets, lending the soundtrack tonal variety — from D.N. Madhok's lyrical romance to the Urdu cadence of Mahir Ul Qadri's verses.

Zaban belongs to C. Ramchandra's formative early-1940s period, before the breakthrough success that would make him one of the defining composers of the late 1940s and 1950s. Working with a roster of lyricists — D.N. Madhok, Mahir Ul Qadri, Ratan Piya and Saraswati Kumar Deepak — and singer-actors Kaushalya and Ishwarlal, the film documents the transitional sound of Hindi cinema just before the playback era fully consolidated.
