Synopsis1941 की एक ऐतिहासिक नाट्य-फ़िल्म जो मुग़ल सम्राट शाहजहाँ के उत्थान को दर्शाती है — मेवाड़ की विजय, 1627–1628 का उत्तराधिकार-युद्ध, उनका राज्याभिषेक, और अंततः उनकी प्रिय मुमताज़ की मृत्यु तथा उनकी स्मृति में ताज महल का निर्माण। आज यह फ़िल्म मुख्यतः युवा सुरैया के आरंभिक परिचय के लिए याद की जाती है, जिन्होंने युवा मुमताज़ की भूमिका निभाई।

A 1941 historical drama tracing the rise of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan — through the conquest of Mewar, the war of succession of 1627–1628, his coronation, and finally the death of his beloved Mumtaz and the building of the Taj Mahal as her monument. The film is best remembered today as the early showcase of a young Suraiya, cast as the younger Mumtaz.

The score by Madhavlal Damodar Master ran to as many as seventeen songs, with lyrics shared between three poets — Behzad Lakhnavi, S. Khalil and Pandit Anuj. The roster of voices drew on Indurani, Fakir Mohammed, Miss Sarojini, Baby Indira and the young S.D. Burman, giving the soundtrack an unusually broad spread of singers for a film of its period.

The film attracted protests before release for what critics called ahistorical portrayals and for allegedly hurting religious sentiments; after minor cuts it was cleared by the Bombay Board of Film Censors. Sources differ on its producing banner, naming both Sri Meenakshi Pictures and Mohan Pictures, and the music director's name appears variously as Madhavlal, Madhulal or simply Damodar across catalogues.

Taj Mahal (1941) marks two notable firsts in Hindi cinema. It gave the future singing-star Suraiya one of her first major acting roles, and — most consequentially — it carried the Hindi-film debut of Sachin Dev Burman, who appeared here as a playback singer for the song 'Prem Ki Pyari Nishani Jaag Rahi' years before he would become one of Indian cinema's defining music directors.

Though the film itself faded from circulation, it survives in music history as the gateway through which S.D. Burman first entered Hindi cinema and as one of the earliest credits of Suraiya, who within a few years would become one of the most celebrated singing-actresses of the 1940s.
