“Naina Tumse Lag Rahe” is one of the seventeen songs of Taj Mahal (1941), the historical drama about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The score was composed by Madhavlal Damodar Master to lyrics shared by Behzad Lakhnavi, S. Khalil and Pandit Anuj. The film is historically notable as an early credit for Suraiya and as the Hindi-cinema debut of S.D. Burman, who sang on its soundtrack.

The Poetry

Behzad Lakhnavi — born Sardar Hasan Khan in Lucknow in 1900 — brought to this film the refined sensibility of a poet steeped in the Lucknow mushā'ira tradition, where ghazal and naat were the defining forms. His verse tended toward the intimate and yearning rather than the declamatory, making him a natural fit for a Mughal romance anchored in Shah Jahan's devotion to Mumtaz. The title 'Naina Tumse Lag Rahe' — 'my eyes are fastened upon you' — uses the classical imagery of naina (eyes) as the seat of longing, a trope running from medieval bhakti poetry through Urdu ghazal. The verb lag rahe carries both attachment and helplessness: eyes that have become fixed, as if magnetised, unable to look away. This is the register of firaq (separation-longing) poetry, where the beloved's presence is simultaneously consolation and affliction. Behzad would later go on to write 'Mere Liye Woh Gham-e-Intezaar' for Anokha Pyar (1948), sung by Lata Mangeshkar — confirming the lyrical continuity he established in these early Mughal films.

The Story

Taj Mahal (1941) was directed by Nanubhai Vakil for New Theatres and stands as one of the most song-rich Mughal historicals of its era, packing seventeen numbers into a narrative tracking Shah Jahan from the Deccan campaigns through Mumtaz Mahal's death and the building of the monument. The music was composed by Madhavlal Damodar Master against a libretto shared among three lyricists — Behzad Lakhnavi, S. Khalil (who also acted in the film), and Pandit Anuj — a multivoiced approach unusual even for the crowded 1941 season. Two facts give this soundtrack an outsized historical significance: it provided Sachin Dev Burman his debut as a playback singer in Hindi cinema, crediting him on the song 'Prem Ki Pyari Nishani Jaag Rahi'; and it featured the young Suraiya in one of her first screen appearances. The film's blend of Urdu courtly verse and Hindustani classical colouring reflects Vakil's awareness that the Mughal genre demanded a particular tonal register — one that Behzad Lakhnavi, a practised musha'ira poet, was well placed to supply.

The Legacy

The film's primary legacy rests on a single, well-documented historical fact: 'Taj Mahal' (1941) gave Sachin Dev Burman, later one of Hindi cinema's greatest composers, his debut as a playback singer — a detail recorded in standard SD Burman biographies and confirmed by the song credit for 'Prem Ki Pyari Nishani Jaag Rahi.' The film also marked one of the earliest screen appearances of Suraiya, who would go on to become a defining voice of the 1940s. Behzad Lakhnavi continued writing for Hindi films through the late 1940s before emigrating to Pakistan post-Partition, where he worked for Radio Pakistan until his death in 1974. The film itself is rarely screened today, but it occupies a footnote in SD Burman scholarship as the starting point of his Hindi-cinema relationship.
