“Muskurati Hai Kali” is one of the seventeen songs of Taj Mahal (1941), the historical drama about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The score was composed by Madhavlal Damodar Master to lyrics shared by Behzad Lakhnavi, S. Khalil and Pandit Anuj. The film is historically notable as an early credit for Suraiya and as the Hindi-cinema debut of S.D. Burman, who sang on its soundtrack.
The Poetry

'Muskurati hai kali' (the bud smiles/opens with a smile) is a classic Urdu-Hindi garden image: the flower bud's unfurling rendered as a smile, the beloved's face and the garden's bloom made metaphorically identical. In Behzad Lakhnavi's Lucknow-trained poetic tradition, the garden (chaman, baag) was the primary metaphorical space for love — every bloom a covert declaration, every withering a death of feeling. The verb 'muskurana' (to smile) applied to the kali (bud) rather than to a person gives the image its double quality: the garden seems to smile because the lover is projecting the beloved's expression onto nature, or because nature itself shares in the joy of love. This animated landscape — where flowers smile, breezes whisper — was the dominant metaphorical register of Mughal-court romantic songs in 1940s Hindi cinema.
The Story

Taj Mahal (1941) was directed by Nanubhai Vakil and produced by Sri Meenakshi Pictures. The historical drama traced Shah Jahan's rise — the Mughal conquest of Mewar, the war of succession of 1627-28 — through to Mumtaz Mahal's death and the building of the Taj. Nazir played Shah Jahan while Suraiya appeared in one of her earliest screen roles as Mumtaz. The film attracted pre-release censorship proceedings for its portrayal of Mughal royalty but was cleared with minor cuts. Within this grand narrative arc, 'Muskurati Hai Kali' (the bud smiles) would have been placed in one of the romantic-idyllic sequences between the central pair — the Mughal garden as a site of courtship, standard in the costume dramas of the period. Music was composed by Madhavlal Damodar Master; the per-song vocalist for this track is not documented, though the film's general playback credits included Indurani and Fakir Mohammad.
The Legacy

Taj Mahal (1941) holds documented historical significance through two firsts: Suraiya's appearance as the young Mumtaz Mahal (one of her earliest screen roles, before she became one of the 1940s' most celebrated singing-actresses) and S.D. Burman's debut as a Hindi film playback singer on the soundtrack. Burman sang 'Prem Ki Pyari Nishani Jaag Rahi' — his only documented Hindi film singing credit before he moved entirely to composing, going on to score Guide (1965), Aradhana (1969), and other landmark films.
