A 1942 social drama set around a small-town railway station, where Usha lives a hard, modest life with her widowed father Parmanand, the station master of Rangpur. Naushad's score for Station Master leans on the lighter, folk-tinged idiom of his early years, with leading playback by Rajkumari and supporting voices from Amirbai Karnataki, G. M. Durrani, the young Suraiya, and even actor Prem Adib. Pyarelal Santoshi wrote the bulk of the lyrics, with additional songs by Pandit Indra and B. R. Sharma. Station Master was produced by Prakash Pictures and directed by Chimanlal (C. M.) Luhar. It belongs to the cluster of early-1940s films that built Naushad's reputation in Bombay, and is most often remembered today for marking the very first recorded film songs sung by Suraiya — then a schoolgirl whom Naushad guided in the studio.
