A 1944 Hindi social drama directed by Jayant Desai, with Ishwarlal and Ramola in the lead. Like most films of its era that survive mainly through their gramophone records, Lalkar is now remembered less for its plot than for its music — an early C. Ramchandra (then credited as Chitalkar Ramchandra) score set to the lyrics of Pandit Madhur.

C. Ramchandra composed the entire score; all lyrics were by Pandit Madhur. The known songs spread the singing across the leading playback voices of the mid-1940s — Hamida Banu carries the solo numbers, Zohrabai Ambalewali and G. M. Durrani share the duets, and Chitalkar and Rewa Shankar take the lighter, comic and novelty pieces such as 'Dhire Dhire Chal Tangewale'.

Lalkar belongs to the crucial early-1940s phase of C. Ramchandra's career, when — still billing himself as Chitalkar Ramchandra — he was building the rhythmic, light-touch musical sensibility that would soon make him one of the defining composers of the late 1940s and 1950s. The film's surviving songs, voiced by Hamida Banu, Zohrabai Ambalewali, G. M. Durrani, Rewa Shankar and Chitalkar himself, document a composer finding his idiom.

ललकार उन अनेक कम प्रसिद्ध फ़िल्मों में से एक है जिनके ज़रिए सी. रामचंद्र की ख्याति-पूर्व कारीगरी को खोजा जा सकता है। ख़ासकर हास्य-नवीनता गीत 'पढ़ोगे लिखोगे होगे ख़राब' लोक-स्मृति में बचा रहा, इसका शीर्षक एक लोक-कहावत बन गया, जबकि फ़िल्म स्वयं विस्मृत हो गई — 1940 के दशक के संगीत-प्रधान सिनेमा का एक विशिष्ट भाग्य।

Lalkar is one of the many lesser-known films through which C. Ramchandra's pre-fame craftsmanship can be traced. The comic-novelty song 'Padhoge Likhoge Hoge Kharab' in particular survived in popular memory, its title becoming a folk catchphrase, even as the film itself faded — a typical fate for the music-led cinema of the 1940s.
