The Monographजीवनी Biography

Ramola — born Rachel Cohen on 7 July 1917 in Bombay, and often listed as Ramola Devi — was one of the most popular leading ladies of 1940s Hindi cinema. Raised in a Baghdadi Jewish family that later settled in Calcutta, she performed on stage with her sisters and appeared in Bengali films before director Kidar Sharma cast her in his directorial debut Dil Hi To Hai (1939). Her breakthrough came as Madhuri in Khazanchi (1941), the landmark Pancholi hit whose Ghulam Haider score brought Punjabi folk rhythms into mainstream film music; her performance as the film's spirited heroine made her a star across India. Like many screen performers of the era before playback singing fully took over, Ramola also sang her own songs: in Manchali (1943), composed by G. A. Chishti, her recorded numbers included 'Dhoop Hai Dhalti' and 'Panchi Ga Re', and contemporary critics praised her lively village-tomboy turn in the film. Her other credits include Khamoshi (1942), Kaliyan (1944), Shukriya (1944), Albeli (1945) and Hum Bhi Insan Hain (1948). She retired from the screen around 1951, as a new generation of heroines emerged, and died in Bombay on 10 December 1988.
