A 1943 Hindi social drama from Sunrise Pictures, directed by V.M. Vyas, built around the twin star presence of Shanta Apte and the young Noor Jehan. As with most films of the period its plot served chiefly as a frame for its songs, and the picture was remembered far more for its music — and for the box-office strength it carried into a crowded 1943 season — than for its narrative.

The score was a three-handed effort credited to Pannalal Ghosh, Rafiq Ghaznavi and Shanti Kumar — an unusual collaboration of the great flute master Pannalal Ghosh with the singer-composer Rafiq Ghaznavi. The nine songs, all written by debutant Bharat Vyas, divided largely between Shanta Apte's classically schooled voice and Noor Jehan's brighter, more flexible delivery, with Rafiq Ghaznavi himself joining as duet partner on two numbers.

The film belongs to the wartime 1943 boom, the same year as Bombay Talkies' Kismet and Prabhat's Ram Rajya. Bharat Vyas, a Rajasthani poet who had drifted to Bombay, found his entry into films here; the work led to a long career that peaked in the devotional and Rajshri musicals of the 1950s and 60s.

Duhai is notable as the film that launched Bharat Vyas — later one of Hindi cinema's most distinguished lyricists ('Aye Malik Tere Bande Hum', 'Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo') — in his debut as a film songwriter. It also captured the young Noor Jehan sharing songs with the already-established Maharashtrian star-singer Shanta Apte, a meeting of two distinct vocal worlds on a single soundtrack.

Today Duhai is remembered chiefly through gramophone-era song listings rather than as surviving cinema, like most films of its decade. Its lasting footnote in Hindi-film history is as the debut credit of Bharat Vyas and as one more soundtrack documenting Noor Jehan's pre-Partition Bombay years before her 1947 departure to Pakistan.
