Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's immortal novel of the dissolute zamindar's son Devdas — torn between childhood love Paro and the courtesan Chandramukhi, descending into alcoholism. P.C. Barua's adaptation with Saigal in the title role and Timir Baran's score became the definitive film statement of the Devdas myth and the template for the doomed romantic hero in Hindi cinema.

Timir Baran's score married Bengali classical inflection to the pathos of Urdu verse; the slow, aching tempo of the signature songs matched Saigal's technique of singing as if thinking aloud.

P.C. Barua shot parallel versions in Bengali (with himself as Devdas) and Hindi (with Saigal); Saigal reportedly improvised some vocal ornaments, which Timir Baran incorporated into the final score. The Hindi version reached a far wider audience and established both the film and Saigal as national icons.

The originary text of the Devdas archetype in Hindi cinema; Saigal's performance and the songs 'Balam Aaye Baso' and 'Dukh Ke Ab Din' became inseparable from the character across all later versions (Bimal Roy 1955, Sanjay Leela Bhansali 2002).

Every Devdas adaptation answers this 1935 original; the songs entered antakshari culture and folk memory across generations. Kidar Sharma's lyrical work here launched his career as one of Hindi cinema's foremost poet-lyricists.
