Biography

Promathesh Chandra Barua — P.C. Barua — was one of the central creative forces of New Theatres Calcutta and among the most important directors of 1930s Hindi and Bengali cinema. The son of a Gauripur zamindar family in Assam, he was drawn to theatre and then film, and his aristocratic sensibility — along with a personal identification with the figure of the tortured romantic — made him the ideal adaptor of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas (1935). He directed the Hindi version with K.L. Saigal in the title role, and himself played Devdas in the Bengali version — one of Indian cinema's most self-conscious acts of artistic identification.

Early Life

Born in Gaurip ur, Assam into a wealthy zamindar family, P.C. Barua was educated partly in England. His exposure to European theatre and film gave him a cosmopolitan perspective that shaped his approach to Indian cinema.

Career

P.C. Barua's directorial career at New Theatres produced a series of films that adapted major Bengali literary works. Devdas (1935) is his masterpiece — released in parallel Hindi and Bengali versions. He also directed several other films in this period. As an actor he appeared in his own Bengali Devdas, creating an identification between director and character that has fascinated film historians.

Legacy

P.C. Barua's Devdas (1935) set the visual and emotional grammar for the character's three major adaptations — a grammar that Bimal Roy revised and deepened in 1955, and Bhansali operaticised in 2002. He also established the practice of parallel-language production that later became standard.

Musical Style

As a director rather than musician, Barua's musical contribution was curatorial — his choice of R.C. Boral and Timir Baran as composers for Devdas produced the emotional soundtrack of early Hindi cinema's most enduring archetype.

Cultural Impact

P.C. Barua's Devdas (1935) set the visual, emotional and musical grammar of one of Indian literature's most adapted stories. His parallel Hindi-Bengali production system became standard practice. The aristocratic melancholy of his directorial sensibility defined what 'literary cinema' meant in the 1930s subcontinent.
