Chand is a 1944 social drama produced by the Prabhat Film Company and directed by D. D. Kashyap, with Prem Adib and Begum Para in the lead and the celebrated dancer Sitara Devi in a featured role. The film is remembered today less for its melodrama than for its place in music history: it was the debut Hindi-film score of the composer brothers Husnlal and Bhagatram, working with lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi — a partnership that would go on to shape late-1940s film music.

The score for Chand was written by Husnlal-Bhagatram to lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi, with the singing shared chiefly between Zeenat Begum, G. M. Durrani and the female vocalist Manju, alongside Sitara Devi who sang for her own role. The songs span romantic duets, patriotic numbers and solo laments — an early, exploratory range that prefigures the wide emotional palette for which the duo became known.

By 1944 the Prabhat Film Company, once the prestige studio of Pune, was past its golden Marathi-Hindi peak, yet it still commanded a strong production apparatus. Entrusting a debutant composing pair with a full soundtrack was a notable gamble — one that paid off, as Husnlal-Bhagatram soon moved to the centre of Hindi film music with hits in films such as Pyar Ki Jeet and Badi Bahen.

Chand is the launching point of one of Hindi cinema's most important composing teams. Husnlal-Bhagatram — widely regarded as the first composer-duo of the Hindi film industry — made their debut here, beginning a creative association with lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi that would produce close to 160 songs across two dozen films. The film thus sits at the start of the melody-rich, light-classical and folk-tinged sound that the duo would popularise in the years immediately after Independence.

As the first film of Husnlal-Bhagatram, Chand marks the beginning of a body of work that helped define the sweet, melody-forward idiom of late-1940s Hindi film song. Lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi's long collaboration with the duo also begins here, making the film a foundational footnote in the careers of three figures who would shape the decade's music.
