Char Aankhen is a 1944 Hindi social-romantic drama directed by Sushil Majumdar, with Leela Chitnis and P. Jairaj in the lead. As with most studio productions of the wartime period, its lasting interest lies less in the melodrama of its plot than in its songs — a compact score by Anil Biswas set to the verse of the Hindi poet Narendra Sharma — which carried the film into the gramophone repertoire of the mid-1940s. Leela Chitnis, then still active as both heroine and singing voice, performs most of the album herself.

Anil Biswas's score for Char Aankhen is built largely around Leela Chitnis's own voice, with the lighter and duet numbers shared with the playback singers Tara and Pratap. The lyrics throughout are by Narendra Sharma. The best-remembered number is the wistful 'Hamein Yaad Aa Rahi Hai Unki', a Leela Chitnis solo that is the song most often cited from the film. The album ranges from this nostalgic ache to playful eye-to-eye romantic duets ('Aankho Mein Aankhen Daal Do') and devotional address ('Do Aise Vardan Prabhu').

Char Aankhen is notable as one of the 1944 films in which Anil Biswas — one of the most consequential composers of the formative era of Hindi film music — worked with the poet Narendra Sharma, who would go on to write some of the language's most cherished film and non-film lyrics. The score is also a document of Leela Chitnis as a performing singer: she carries the majority of the album in her own voice, a reminder of the period before the playback star system fully separated the screen actress from the singing voice.
