The Monographजीवनी Biography

Allah Rakha (born Allah Rakha Qureshi, 29 April 1919 – 3 February 2000), popularly known as Ustad Alla Rakha, was an Indian tabla player and composer, widely regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the Punjab gharana of tabla. Born in Ghagwal village in the Jammu region, he left home at the age of twelve to train under Mian Kader Baksh, and later joined All India Radio in Delhi in 1936 before moving to Bombay in 1940, where he performed the station's first-ever tabla solo.
Alongside his classical career, he worked as a music director for Hindi and Punjabi films under the screen name A. R. Qureshi, scoring music for close to two dozen productions between 1943 and the mid-1960s, including Bewafa (1952), Indrasabha (1956), and the Punjabi films Madari (1950) and Jagga (1964), working with playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Asha Bhosle. By the late 1960s he had stepped away from film scoring to devote himself fully to classical performance, beginning a celebrated three-decade partnership as tabla accompanist to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar that took Indian classical music to international stages, including the Monterey Pop Festival (1967) and Woodstock (1969).
Alla Rakha was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1977 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982. He died in Mumbai in 2000. His sons Zakir Hussain, Fazal Qureshi, and Taufiq Qureshi all became renowned tabla players, with Zakir Hussain achieving international acclaim.
