ये हवाएँ सलाम कहती हैं

The brightest number in a film otherwise weighted towards mourning, and one of the four Ghar songs whose lyric text has survived. Amirbai Karnataki sings it alone. The device is simple and sustained without variation for the whole song: each stanza names some element of the world — the winds, the gathering clouds, the glances of onlookers, the blessings of well-wishers — and reports that it is offering a salute. What is being saluted is a meeting, and the song blesses it outright rather than merely describing it.

Built on a short, insistently repeated refrain phrase that returns at the head and foot of every stanza, so the song works by accumulation rather than development — each verse adds a new element to the list and then hands the melody back to the same figure. That is a structure a listener can hold after one hearing, and it is the reason the number reads as festive rather than merely pleasant. Alla Rakha, whose training was as a Punjab gharana tabla player, gives it a walking mid-tempo pulse and keeps the accompaniment light enough for Amirbai's slightly nasal, forward-placed voice to carry the whole thing.

Roopbani writes a list poem, and the list is the argument. Instead of stating that a meeting is joyful, the lyric has the natural world do the stating on its behalf: air, cloud, eye and prayer are each described as bowing to the occasion, so that the emotion arrives as external testimony rather than as personal claim. A stanza on flowers laughing in their season makes the analogy explicit — youth and its happiness are being treated as a natural event, not an achievement — and the closing turn credits love itself with having set life singing again. The word 'salaam' recurring through a lyric otherwise built from Hindi nature-imagery is characteristic of the Hindustani register that Bombay lyricists of the 1940s wrote in without remarking on it.

Ghar was a Sunrise Pictures family drama directed by V. M. Vyas, with Alla Rakha's score and Roopbani's lyrics. No print or synopsis of the film survives, so the songs carry the burden of indicating what it was about, and this one indicates the part of the story the mourning songs do not reach. Ghar's soundtrack divides cleanly: two widow's laments on one side, and on the other a set of lighter numbers of which this is the most emphatically happy. Which character it belongs to, and at what point, is not recorded anywhere.

The song is a good sample of Amirbai Karnataki at a point when she was still a first-call voice in Bombay, a few years after 'Dhiire Se Aajaa Ri Ankhiyan Mein' had made her nationally familiar and shortly before the field around her changed completely. It is also evidence about Alla Rakha the film composer rather than Alla Rakha the classical percussionist: the same year he wrote a widow's lament for this film, he wrote this, and the two sit on the same eight-song record.
