Woh Kyun Humse Aankhein Churane Lage Hain

Overview

The last of the five Kul Kalank songs listed without a singer, and like the others it survives only as a title in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh-derived catalogues. Its phrasing is the most Urdu-inflected in the film's song list, and its question — why has he started avoiding my eyes — is the standard hinge of the mid-film complaint song, the point at which a character notices a change she cannot yet name. No recording has been traced.

The Music

Nothing about the music can be described, because no copy of the side has been located and no contemporary account of it survives. The only firm facts are structural: an Allah Rakha composition written under the film name A. R. Qureshi, cut in 1945 as part of an eleven-song score for Sunrise Pictures, produced under the same three-minute limit and with the same modest studio resources as every other side in the set.

The Poetry

The Urdu idiom of avoiding someone's eyes is not about shyness; it is about guilt, and specifically about a guilt the other person has not yet been told. That is what makes it a workhorse of the film lyric — the line lets an audience know a secret exists before the plot reveals it. Roopbani's construction here is closer to the ghazal's register than the folk-tinged Hindi of the film's other titles, which suggests a scene pitched at the more literate end of the audience. Whether the song was addressed by a woman to a lover, a wife to a husband, or a mother to a son is not documented.

The Story

Kul Kalank, a 'social' from Sunrise Pictures directed by Nanubhai B. Vakil, was one of more than seventy Hindi films released in 1945. Its production company was a second-tier Bombay outfit, its director a veteran journeyman working since 1929, and its composer a classical tabla player taking film assignments under a pseudonym. That combination is why so little of it survives: no print, no synopsis, no press file, and only four of eleven records.

The Legacy

The song has left no trace beyond its catalogue line. It is documented here for completeness, with the singer field empty because the singer is unknown and the musical description limited to what the surrounding facts support. That is the honest state of the record for most Hindi film songs of the 1940s — a title, two credits, and silence.

Margin Notes
