The Monographपरिचय Overview

Kalyani's only number in Ghar, and the most interesting of the film's songs for what its credit implies rather than for anything that can be said about the song itself. Kalyani appears both in Ghar's cast list and as the singer of this track, which places her among the actress-singers of the studio era, at the point when the profession was splitting into acting and playback as separate trades. A recording of the song has circulated, but no lyric text has been published, so its words are not reported here.
The Music

No published description, notation or transcription of this song was located, and its lyric has not been printed by the archives that carry the rest of Ghar's soundtrack, so its melody and setting are not described here. What is on record is the credit: Alla Rakha composed it, as he did all eight songs of the film, at the start of the Hindi and Punjabi film career he pursued under the name A. R. Qureshi alongside his work as a Punjab gharana tabla player.
The Poetry

The lyric has not survived in print. Roopbani wrote it, as he wrote the whole of Ghar, but the archives that preserve four of the film's eight texts do not preserve this one, so its imagery and structure are unknown. The title is a plain Hindi sentence addressed to a woman about arriving at her beloved's door — a formula common enough in the period's bridal and welcome songs that a reader will want to conclude the song is one of those. That conclusion is not supported by anything beyond the title, and it is not drawn here.
The Story

Ghar was a Sunrise Pictures family drama directed by V. M. Vyas, and Kalyani was part of the repertory company Vyas had been casting since Ghar Ki Laaj (1941). She appears in the film's cast and sings this song, though no source establishes whether the actress Kalyani in the cast list and the playback singer Kalyani credited here are one person or two who shared a single professional name — a genuine ambiguity in the records of the period, not a detail that has simply been overlooked. No print of the film survives to settle it.
The Legacy

What this entry preserves is a credit rather than a song, and the credit is worth preserving. Actress-singers were standard in Indian cinema's first fifteen sound years and effectively finished by the mid-1950s, by which time playback had become a separate profession with its own small set of dominant voices. Ghar catches the older arrangement still in working order in 1945: an actress in the cast steps up and sings her own number on a score by a classical percussionist who, on another track of the same film, sings one himself.

Margin Notes'

Kalyani is one of two women in Ghar's cast who also sing in it; the other is Molina Devi, credited with 'Honi Thi Jo Ho Gayi'.

Saregama, which sells the track, credits it to 'Chorus, Kalyani' — the only source consulted that puts a chorus on it. HindiGeetMala and MySwar name Kalyani alone.
