Overview

The most substantial number in Ghar (1945) and the one by which the film is still remembered. Zohrabai Ambalewali sings not as the sufferer but to her: the addressee is a woman whom marriage made a bride and death unmade within days, and the song's whole argument is that her pleading will find no listener in a world this size. Roopbani's lyric is one of only four from the film's eight songs whose text survives in the song archives, and it is the clearest surviving evidence of what Ghar was actually about.

The Music

A slow lament in the standard mid-1940s Bombay idiom — a low-lying, largely unornamented melody carried by Zohrabai's open, chest-forward voice over the period's usual harmonium-and-sarangi bed, with the percussion kept to a soft, unhurried pulse. The interesting thing is who wrote it: Alla Rakha was a Punjab gharana tabla player by training and vocation, and here he deliberately keeps rhythm out of the foreground, leaving the weight of the song entirely on the vocal line and its long held phrase-ends.

The Poetry

Roopbani writes a consolation that refuses to console. The refrain instructs the woman to stop pleading and stop weeping — not because her grief is disproportionate, but because the world is too large and too deaf for either to register. The verses set out her loss in the settled vocabulary of Hindi widow-poetry: the vermilion wiped from the parting, the household undone, the word 'widow' fastened to someone who had been a bride for barely two days. What is unusual for a 1945 film lyric is the absence of any promise of redress — no God intervenes, no reformer arrives, no second life is offered. The poem's only counsel is endurance without display, which is both a compassion and a verdict on the society that requires it.

The Story

Ghar was a family drama made at Sunrise Pictures, Bombay, directed by the studio's house director V. M. Vyas, with music by Alla Rakha — credited in films as A. R. Qureshi — and lyrics by Roopbani, the second consecutive Vyas film for that composer-lyricist pair after Maa Baap (1944). No print, press book or contemporary synopsis of Ghar is known to survive, so this song does double duty: it is a record and it is evidence. Because its text was preserved while the film was not, the widow at its centre is effectively the only character of Ghar whose situation can be described with confidence. All eight of the film's songs are still sold by Saregama; this is one of the five that have also surfaced as audio on the archival blog Atul's Song A Day.

The Legacy

Ghar has no afterlife as a film, so what remains of it is this recording. It catches Zohrabai Ambalewali at the top of a primacy with only two or three years left in it — the year after her four celebrated solos in Naushad's Rattan (1944), and shortly before Lata Mangeshkar's arrival reset the whole female playback field. It is also part of the record of Alla Rakha's parallel life as a film composer, the career he ran under the name A. R. Qureshi through the 1940s and 1950s and largely set aside when his classical work with Ravi Shankar took him to Monterey and Woodstock. The song has kept a quiet circulation among collectors of 1940s Hindi film music, where it is treated as the one piece of Ghar worth knowing.
