The Monographपरिचय Overview

"Suno Ji Pyari Koyaliya Bole" is the Zohrabai Ambalewali–Amar duet that has travelled furthest out of Naushad's Sanyasi (1945) score: four separate transfers of the 78-rpm side circulate on archive channels, the most-played of them with around ten thousand plays, several times more than any other song of the film. Every listing agrees on the credits — Naushad composing, Pandit Madhur writing, the two voices together — and one of the uploads names Pandit Madhur explicitly, a useful independent confirmation of the lyricist attribution.
The Music

At about two and a half minutes it is the shortest side of the album, and the tightest: a compact, brightly moving duet with a strong dholak pulse and a melody that sits high enough in both singers' ranges to stay light. Naushad's handling of the two voices is conversational — short exchanges rather than long alternating stanzas — which is what gives the record its forward momentum and is probably why it is the one people have kept returning to. The instrumental fills between phrases are brief and functional, in the manner of a 78 recorded to a hard three-minute ceiling.
The Poetry

The koyal — the Asian koel, the cuckoo of the Indian summer — is one of the fixed signs of the Sanskrit and Braj poetic inheritance: its call means spring, and spring in this tradition means the intensification of longing, either satisfied or unbearable depending on whether the beloved is present. 'Suno ji' at the head of the line is an ordinary conversational opener, 'listen', and the pairing of that plainness with the classical bird-signal is the register the whole song works in: village speech carrying an inherited literary image. Whether the film's scene uses the cuckoo as a promise or as a taunt is not documented, and this entry does not decide it. No line of the lyric is reproduced.
The Story

Sanyasi's soundtrack was recorded at Kardar Studios in Bombay and pressed by HMV in its GE series; Wikipedia records that the sound was taken on R.C.A. equipment. Amar sings five of the film's sides and plays Mohan on screen; Zohrabai Ambalewali, who was not in the cast, sings seven. The pairing of an on-screen singing actor with an off-screen professional voice was exactly the transitional arrangement of the mid-1940s, on its way to the fully separated playback system of the 1950s.
The Legacy

This is the song by which Sanyasi is still occasionally heard at all. Its survival in four independent transfers means four different collectors thought the disc worth digitising, which is as close as a 1945 film song of this rank gets to a popular verdict eighty years later. It has never appeared on a commercial compilation.

Margin Notes

The koel's call as a marker of spring and of intensified longing runs from Sanskrit kavya through Braj bhasha padas into Hindi film lyric, an unbroken image across roughly fifteen centuries.
