Overview

Of the eleven songs Allah Rakha recorded for Sunrise Pictures' Kul Kalank, this flirtatious duet is the only one that has stayed in circulation. Amirbai Karnataki — then among the busiest voices in Bombay after her success in Kismet (1943) — trades phrases with a very young Mohammed Rafi, who in 1945 was still an unproven newcomer. The 'babu in the cap' of the title is the stock figure of the town-bred young gentleman, and the number plays its flirtation as light comedy rather than romance. It is one of four sides from the film that survive in the Saregama digital catalogue.

The Music

The song belongs to the light, conversational duet type that Bombay studios used to loosen a melodrama's middle reels — a three-and-a-half-minute 78-rpm side built so that two voices can alternate phrases over a steady dholak pulse. What gives it interest is the signature on the label. Allah Rakha was a Punjab-gharana tabla player of serious classical standing, and his film work under the name A. R. Qureshi is characteristically rhythm-forward and melodically plain, written to be caught at first hearing rather than admired. Set beside Naushad's far grander orchestral writing of the same year, this is the modest, functional end of 1945 film scoring — and it is nearly all that survives of a musician the wider world would come to know purely as a percussionist.

The Poetry

Roopbani's lyric works entirely inside the idiom of the teasing complaint, where accusation is the form that flirtation takes: the woman charges the young man with theft, and the thing stolen is her heart and her peace of mind. The cap of the title does real work — it marks the man socially, the headgear of the town clerk or the college-going gentleman, and sets him apart from the world of the woman addressing him. That small class distance is what the whole number is built on, and it is a distance the film's own title, 'the stain on the family name', suggests the story took a great deal more seriously elsewhere. Nothing in the writing reaches for literary Urdu; this is deliberately plain Hindustani, pitched at the gallery.

The Story

Kul Kalank was a 'social' produced by Sunrise Pictures and directed by Nanubhai B. Vakil, a film-maker who had been working since the silent era. Shanta Hublikar, the Prabhat star of Aadmi (1939), headed a cast that also included Masood, Shahzadi, Dulari, Majid, Pratima Devi, Wazir Mohammed Khan — the fakir whose voice was the first ever heard singing in an Indian talkie — and Amirbai Karnataki herself, who appears on screen as well as on the soundtrack. No print of the film is known to survive and no detailed plot summary has been preserved, so this record is now one of the few direct traces the production left behind.

The Legacy

The song's afterlife is entirely a matter of who sang it. 1945 was Mohammed Rafi's second year of work in Bombay: across that year he recorded twelve songs in seven films for six different composers, and Kul Kalank is one of those seven. The duet is therefore an early, datable point in his recorded career, and one of the few Allah Rakha film sides that can still be heard at all. The film itself is remembered by neither audience.

Margin Notes

Kul Kalank is one of the seven films for which Mohammed Rafi recorded in 1945 — twelve songs in all, for six different music directors — in only his second year of work in Bombay.

The composer credited on the label as Allah Rakha is Alla Rakha Qureshi — later Ustad Alla Rakha, Ravi Shankar's tabla accompanist at the Monterey Pop Festival and one of the most internationally recognised Indian musicians of the twentieth century.
