Historical Significance

Chamara Kriya is a Carnatic janya raag named after the chamara — the ornamental yak-tail fly-whisk used in South Indian royal processions and temple rituals as a mark of honour — and kriya (action, deed, ritual performance, purification rite). The chamara (also written camara, from Sanskrit cāmara) is waved ceremonially over deities and kings to indicate divine status. Kriya in Carnatic music also denotes a class of devotional compositions emphasising direct ritual action or purificatory intent. This raag belongs to the corpus of ceremonially-named Carnatic janya raags compiled in regional encyclopedias of the 19th–20th centuries. Its parent melakarta and scale notes are undocumented in standard Carnatic musicological literature.
