In Indian musical tradition, the creative force of Brahma is associated with the origin of music itself — the Sama Veda (the Vedic scripture of song) is said to have been composed under Brahma's inspiration, and the great sage Narada is regarded as Brahma's musical disciple. The name 'Leela' (divine sport or play) reflects the Hindu philosophical concept of the universe as the playful creative expression of the divine.

As a performance raag, Brahma Leela is associated with Sanskrit devotional compositions (kritis and varnams) honouring the creator. It is extremely rarely performed in contemporary Carnatic concerts and does not appear to be part of the standard teaching repertoire.
