ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance

Bhuyo Mani is an extremely rare Carnatic janya raag. The name presents an interesting etymology: bhuyo (or bhuyas) is a Sanskrit comparative/superlative particle meaning again, more, further, or most great, while mani (मणि) means gem or jewel. The compound could be understood as the greatest jewel or the gem above all gems — a superlative quality in the tradition of hyperbolic raag naming found in some South Indian lineages. Alternatively, bhuyo may relate to bhuja (serpent), placing this raag in the same serpent-gem family as Bhujagamani, though this interpretation is less certain. The existence of this raag name in specialized Carnatic catalogues reflects the immense creative diversity of the tradition's janya raag nomenclature, where thousands of raag names were generated over centuries. Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta system (c. 1620 CE) provides the theoretical basis, but Bhuyo Mani's parent melakarta and swaras have not been documented in mainstream Carnatic reference works.
