Historical Significance

Bhudha Mayuram is a Carnatic janya raag combining Budha (बुध), the Navagraha deity of the planet Mercury and patron of intellect and speech, with Mayuram (मयूरम्), the Sanskrit word for peacock (mayura). The peacock is the vahana (celestial mount) of Lord Murugan/Kartikeya and stands as an iconic symbol of beauty, dignity, and the monsoon's arrival in Indian classical arts. Together, the name evokes Mercury's eloquence expressed with peacock-like display and grace. The tradition of naming raags after Navagraha deities is especially associated with Muthuswami Dikshitar's 19th-century corpus and with later composers who expanded this system. Venkatamakhin's 1620 CE melakarta system and subsequent texts by Govindacharya structure Carnatic raags systematically, but Bhudha Mayuram's specific parent melakarta and swaras have not been codified in standard reference works. Without verified arohana/avarohana, no Hindustani thaat equivalence can be established.
