In 1945 an unknown singer named Mukesh stepped to the microphone for Pehli Nazar and sang 'Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De' in a manner openly modelled on K.L. Saigal. It was his first credited playback assignment, composed by Anil Biswas to words by Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and it is the song that made him. hindigeetmala records the sequence as picturised on Motilal and Munawwar Sultana.

'पहली नज़र' का निर्देशन और निर्माण मज़हर ख़ान ने मज़हर आर्ट प्रोडक्शंस के लिए किया, संगीत अनिल बिस्वास का। मुकेश — मुकेश चंद माथुर — इससे पहले कुछ छोटी फ़िल्म भूमिकाओं में आ चुके थे, लेकिन 'दिल जलता है तो जलने दे' वही गीत है जिसने उन्हें बनाया। माईस्वार, गणेश अनंतरामन की 'बॉलीवुड मेलोडीज़' के हवाले से, दर्ज करता है कि रिलीज़ से पहले फ़िल्म के वितरकों को यह गीत पसंद नहीं आया — उन्हें लगा मुकेश की आवाज़ मोतीलाल पर नहीं जँचती — और मज़हर ख़ान ने मुकेश के अनुनय पर ही इसे रखा, इस शर्त पर कि दर्शकों ने न सराहा तो पहले शो के बाद हटा दिया जाएगा। दर्शकों ने सराहा, और गीत बना रहा। दूसरा विवरण, अशोक दा रानडे की पुस्तक के हवाले से, बताता है कि रिकॉर्डिंग से पहले मुकेश ग़ायब हो गए थे और नाराज़ अनिल बिस्वास ने थप्पड़ मारकर कहा कि उसकी टीस को रिकॉर्डिंग में उतारो। प्रस्तुति में सैगल का ऋण स्पष्ट है और तभी से इसकी चर्चा होती रही है।

Pehli Nazar was directed and produced by Mazhar Khan for Mazhar Art Productions, with Anil Biswas as music director. Mukesh — Mukesh Chand Mathur — had appeared in a few minor film roles before this, but 'Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De' was the song that made him. MySwar, citing Ganesh Anantharaman's Bollywood Melodies, records that the film's distributors disliked the song before release, feeling Mukesh's voice did not suit Motilal, and that Mazhar Khan agreed to retain it only after Mukesh pleaded — on the condition that it would be pulled after the first show if audiences rejected it. They did not, and it stayed. A second account, cited to Ashok Da Ranade's Hindi Film Song: Music Beyond Boundaries, has Mukesh going missing before the recording and being slapped by an angry Anil Biswas, who told him to bring the pain of it into the take. The debt to Saigal in the performance is unmistakable and has been remarked on ever since.
