Arohana and avarohana are not documented in this file; no pakad can be derived by note math. Some Carnatic references associate Bharathi with the Harikambhoji (28th melakarta) family, whose scale corresponds to the Khamaj thaat (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha komal Ni), but this association requires confirmation against primary sources before a characteristic phrase can be stated.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Bharathi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Bharathi is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition.. With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Peace/Tranquility (शांत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke peaceful, meditative emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Bharathi is a Carnatic raag with a layered identity—its name can honour at least two revered figures: the goddess Bharati (another name for Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, speech, music, and the arts) and the great Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi (1882–1921), who used classical Carnatic raag frameworks in his lyric poetry and is credited with revolutionising Tamil literature. In Carnatic music, Bharathi appears in some raag catalogues as a janya raag, though its precise note structure and parent melakarta vary across sources. If aligned with Harikambhoji (28th melakarta)—one of the most important of the 72 melakartas, equivalent to the Khamaj thaat in Hindustani music—Bharathi would carry a warm, affectionate, lyrical quality. The raag's peaceful evening character and association with devotional or poetic content are consistent with both its possible namesakes: the goddess of learning and the poet of Tamil renaissance.

In Film Music

Bharathi has limited documented presence in film music. In Tamil cinema, compositions honouring the poet Subramania Bharathi sometimes feature classical Carnatic raag textures, and Bharathi's own song compositions have been adapted for film. However, Raag Bharathi as a distinct melodic entity is not documented in mainstream Hindi or other film music.
