Karan Dewan was a leading man of 1940s Hindi cinema who possessed a genuine singing voice, performing his own playback in several films during an era when that distinction mattered. His gentle, melodic tenor suited the romantic lead roles he typically played, and his voice was used to strong effect by Naushad in Rattan (1944), where his duets with Swarnlata on 'Ruthe Ho Tum' became one of the film's defining moments. He worked primarily with Bombay Talkies and later independent productions through the 1940s.

Born in Punjab, Dewan came to Bombay with both acting ambitions and musical training, unusual for the period.
