A 1942 Wadia Movietone social-musical built around its leading lady Shobhana Samarth, with Shahu Modak and Karan Dewan in the principal cast and direction by Kumarsen Samarth. The film is remembered today less for its now-obscure storyline than for marking the independent debut of composer Vasant Desai, whose score — set to the lyrics of Pandit Indra — launched one of Hindi cinema's most distinguished musical careers.

Six songs by Vasant Desai with lyrics by Pandit Indra are documented for Shobha. The voices were those of the players themselves in the pre-playback convention of the day — Shobhana Samarth, Shahu Modak and the singer Kalyani — including the actor-sung 'Is Umr Mein Mushkil Nahin' by Shahu Modak and a Krishna lullaby, 'Jasoda Hari Paalane Jhulave', by Shobhana Samarth.

Vasant Desai had spent years at Pune's Prabhat Film Company in assorted roles before being entrusted with a full score of his own. Shobha was that opportunity, produced under the Wadia Movietone banner in Bombay and directed by Kumarsen Samarth, husband of leading lady Shobhana Samarth and a cameraman-director of the era.

Shobha is historically significant as the film that launched Vasant Desai as an independent music director. Having apprenticed at Prabhat Film Company, Desai stepped out on his own with this Wadia Movietone production, beginning a career that would later give Hindi cinema landmark scores. The film thus stands as the first chapter of a major composer's story rather than a celebrated work in itself.

While Shobha itself faded from popular memory, its composer did not. Vasant Desai went on to score acclaimed films across the following decades, becoming one of Hindi cinema's most respected classically-rooted music directors. The film is remembered chiefly by archivists and music historians as the starting point of that journey.
