Historical Significance

Raag Avikarai is an obscure Carnatic janya raag with a Tamil name. Avikarai (Tamil: அவிகரை) may derive from Tamil avi (steam, smoke, offering of smoke/incense) and karai (shore, bank) — 'the shore of sacred smoke' — evoking the banks of a sacred river where incense offerings are made. Alternatively, avikara in Sanskrit means 'without transformation' or 'unchanging/immutable,' which would give the raag a philosophical character of permanence and stability. Such dual-layered names were characteristic of the Tamil-Sanskrit bilingual culture of south India. Avikarai is a Sampurna-Sampurna raag with Shanta rasa. It is not documented in the major Carnatic theoretical works and is known in regional oral performance traditions.
