Historical Significance

Arunagiri is a Carnatic janya raga whose name honors one of the most celebrated saint-poets in Tamil devotional literature: Arunagirinathar (அருணகிரிநாதர், c. 15th century CE). Arunagirinathar was a Tamil Shaiva bhakti poet from Thiruvannamalai (the sacred Arunachala hill-city in Tamil Nadu) who devoted his entire life and poetic genius to Lord Murugan (Skanda/Karthikeya). His most celebrated work is the Thiruppugazh (திருப்புகழ், 'Sacred Glory'), a collection of over 1,300 devotional hymns to Murugan set to intricate, mathematically complex rhythmic patterns (talas) that are themselves musical compositions of great sophistication. The name 'Arunagiri' means 'the red/dawn mountain' — 'Aruna' (red, dawn) + 'Giri' (mountain, hill) — referring to Arunachala, the sacred red mountain at Thiruvannamalai considered the embodiment of Shiva himself. By naming a raga Arunagiri, the tradition invokes this sacred mountain, the saint who worshipped there, and the entire tradition of Thiruppugazh rhythmic devotion. The raga likely emerged from or is associated with the Thiruppugazh musical tradition. Its parent melakarta cannot be determined from available sources.

More to KnowIn Film Music
Arunagiri, as a raga named after the revered saint-poet Arunagirinathar and the sacred Arunachala mountain, carries deep devotional resonance in Tamil Nadu. While the Thiruppugazh tradition of Arunagirinathar has influenced Tamil devotional film music and many film songs are set to Thiruppugazh-derived rhythms, the raga Arunagiri specifically has not been documented in Hindi or South Indian commercial film scores. The saint's legacy reaches popular Tamil culture through devotional albums and temple performance, but Arunagiri as a raga identity has not crossed into the mainstream film tradition.
