Historical Significance

Anamayan is a Carnatic janya rāga with a Tamil name meaning 'one without disease or suffering' (anāmayan = disease-free, healthy, pure). In the Vaishnava tradition, this is an epithet of Lord Vishnu as the divine healer and the source of liberation from all suffering (amaya = disease, ailment). The 12th-century Vaishnava poet-saint Nammalvar uses related terminology in the Divya Prabandham, the foundational text of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Annamacharya, the 15th-century Telugu Vaishnava composer, also created compositions invoking Vishnu through such names. The raag's parent melakarta and scale cannot be confirmed without arohana-avarohana data, making it one of several theologically named janya ragas whose musical documentation remains incomplete.
