Sarasangi is almost a Bilawal scale with one substitution: komal dhaivata (D1) replaces shuddha Dha. This creates a characteristic dip on Dha in the upper tetrachord. The phrase highlights the movement from Pa up through komal Dha to shuddha Ni and Sa', then the expressive descent back. No Hindustani thaat has exactly this combination.

सारसाङ्गी कर्नाटक की 72-मेलकर्ता पद्धति का 27वाँ मेलकर्ता है, जो पाँचवें चक्र 'बाण' (मेलकर्ता 25–30) का तृतीय राग है। शुद्ध मध्यम खण्ड (मेलकर्ता 1–36) के अन्तर्गत वेंकटमखी ने 1660 ई. में इसका वर्णन किया। 'सारसाङ्गी' — संगीत की प्रेमिका — यह नाम इसके सुरीले स्वभाव को दर्शाता है। यह राग बिलावल (सभी शुद्ध स्वर) के अत्यन्त निकट है, केवल ध॒ (कोमल धैवत) में अन्तर है जो ऊपरी षट्क में एक सूक्ष्म उदासी का स्पर्श जोड़ता है। यह कई जन्य रागों का जनक है। डॉ. बालमुरलीकृष्ण ने इसमें कृति रची है।

Sarasangi is the 27th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the third raag of the fifth chakra, Bana (melakartas 25–30). It belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36). Venkatamakhi's Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE) enumerated this scale. Sarasangi is notable for being tonally close to Bilawal (all shuddha notes) with the single exception of komal dhaivata (D1), which gives it a subtle melancholic weight in the upper register without otherwise departing from the bright, natural palette. The name means 'one who loves music' (sara = music, sangi = companion). It is a parent raag to several janya ragas. Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna composed a kriti in Sarasangi. Though not a public concert staple, it is better known than many other melakartas.

However, its scale — nearly identical to Bilawal thaat with only komal dhaivata differing — is tonally very close to several North Indian raags that have appeared in film compositions.
