The defining interval of Nasikabhushani is the shatshruti rishabha (R3 / tivra Re) combined with prati madhyama (tivra Ma / M2). R3 has no Hindustani equivalent and no standard thaat accommodates it. This characteristic phrase highlights the two altered notes that give the scale its sharp, luminous character.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Nasikabhushani emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Raag Nasikabhushani is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Nasikabhushani melakarta (#70). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Peace/Tranquility (शांत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke peaceful, meditative emotions. It is traditionally performed during night hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Nasikabhushani is the 70th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the fourth raag of the 12th and final chakra, Aditya. It belongs to the prati madhyama half (melakartas 37–72). Venkatamakhi's Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE) laid the theoretical groundwork; Govindacharya's later revisions in the early 19th century standardised the nomenclature used today. The Aditya chakra (melakartas 67–72) contains ragas with shatshruti rishabha (R3) — a microtone that sits between shuddha rishabha and komal gandhara — which places all six melakartas of this chakra beyond the Hindustani thaat system. As one of the concluding melakartas in the system, Nasikabhushani has been covered by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna in his Janaka Raga Kriti Manjari. It is seldom performed in recital and functions mainly as a structural reference.

Teaching & Learning
Practice Tips

Begin with slow aalapana to internalize the raag's swaroopa (melodic form)

Practice the arohana and avarohana patterns with a tanpura drone

Listen to recordings by master performers to understand the raag's gamakas (ornamentations)

Work on kalpanaswaram (improvisation) within the raag's framework

Common Mistakes

Using incorrect gamakas that belong to a different raag

Not maintaining proper swar sthana (note placement)

Rushing through phrases without allowing the raag bhava to develop

A Specimen Comparison

Nasikabhushani and Kosalam (#71) share the same lower tetrachord — shatshruti Re (tivra Re, R3), shuddha Ga (G2), prati Madhyama (tivra Ma, M2) — but differ in their upper tetrachord Dha and Ni. Nasikabhushani uses shuddha Dha (D2) and komal Ni (N1), while Kosalam uses a different Ni. Distinguishing them in performance requires precise attention to gamaka treatment in the upper register.

Rasikapriya (#72), the final melakarta of the entire system, shares shatshruti Re (R3) with Nasikabhushani but uses G3 (the highest Ga, tivra or chatushruti Ga), creating a maximally sharp lower tetrachord. Nasikabhushani's use of shuddha Ga (G2) — the middle of the three possible Ga variants — gives it a more balanced lower tetrachord than Rasikapriya.

In Film Music

Nasikabhushani, the 70th melakarta in the Carnatic system and second raag of the final Aditya chakra, is a highly specialised concert-stage raag that has never entered Hindi film music. Its scale — shatshruti Rishabha (tivra Re, a sharply raised second), shuddha Ga, prati Madhyama (tivra Ma), shuddha Dha, and kaisiki Nishada (komal Ni) — combines a raised second degree with a raised fourth, creating a thoroughly exotic tonality that does not correspond to any named raag or thaat in the Hindustani tradition. Hindi film composers occasionally drew on unusual Carnatic scales for background scores or special-effect compositions, but the specific combination of notes in Nasikabhushani — particularly the augmented-scale character created by shatshruti Re alongside tivra Ma — has never been documented as the basis of any known film song. Nasikabhushani lives exclusively in kriti and varnam performances at festivals dedicated to rare melakartas, and in the study exercises of advanced Carnatic students working systematically through the complete 72-melakarta curriculum.
