Anees Khatoon (also credited as Anis Khatoon, or simply Khatoon) was an actress-singer of Hindi cinema's pre-playback era, active from the late 1930s through the mid-1940s, when performers routinely sang their own songs on screen. Her best-remembered credit is V. Shantaram's landmark Padosi (1941), where she appeared in the cast and recorded several songs under music director Master Krishnarao to Pandit Sudarshan's lyrics, including "Kaisa Chhaya Hai Aala Ujala Rasiya" and the duet "Ban Mein Bahaar Aa Gayi" with Balwant Singh. In Chauranghee (1942) she sang ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi — "Woh Kab Ke Aaye Bhi" and "Ye Kiska Tasavvur Hai" — set to music co-composed by the Bengali rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. In Nai Zindagi (1943, directed by S. Khalil) she both acted and carried the score, singing solos such as "Dil Kaise Na Tadpe" and "Waqt Kam Shikve Zindagi Bhar Ke", composed by Vasant Kumar Naidu to Arzoo Lakhnavi's words. Her later credits include an acting role in Bhaijan (1945) and the song "Nadiya Ka Behta Pani" in Dil (1946); she also recorded for composer Gyan Dutt in films such as Prithvi Putra, Toofani Toli and Chingari. Little else about her life has been documented.
