Biography

Zeenat Begum (born Shamim Akhtar; 11 November 1931 – 11 December 2007), known as the "Queen of Yesteryear," was a singer of Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi cinema in the 1940s who later became a leading radio artist in Pakistan. Born in Malerkotla, Punjab, she was discovered as a young singer by Pandit Amar Nath around 1937 and trained in classical vocal music.

She made her playback singing debut in 1942 in the Punjabi film Mangti, one of the earliest Golden Jubilee films produced in Lahore, and the same year sang for her first Hindi film, Nishani. After moving to Bombay in 1944, she recorded songs for films including Daasi (1944), Panchhi (1944), Bhaijan (1945), Shalimar (1946), Shehar Se Door (1946), Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Nek Parvin (1946), and Kaneez (1949), working with music directors such as Husnlal Bhagatram, Ghulam Haider, and Pandit Amarnath. Records credit her with roughly 187 songs across 44 pre-Partition films.

After India's Partition in 1947, Zeenat Begum migrated to Pakistan and joined Radio Pakistan's Lahore station, where she built a long career singing ghazals, nazms, and classical and semi-classical forms through the 1950s and 1960s. She was married twice, first to Abdul Jabbar (1949–1955) and later to Saqlain Rizvi. She died in Lahore in 2007 at the age of 76.
