The Monographपरिचय Overview

A slow Zeenat Begum solo, and the song in the Dhamki score that draws most directly on the barsaat tradition — the monsoon as the standing metaphor for longing in north Indian song. The fuller title recorded in the Pakistan Film Magazine archive attaches the raining to the eyes themselves and calls them matwale, intoxicated, which turns a weather image into a description of a face.
The Music

'Barsan' is the Braj form rather than the standard Hindi 'barasna', and Amarnath's setting matches that older register with a slow, semi-classical shape — the register in which a film composer of the 1940s signalled that a song belonged to the inherited repertoire of thumri and barsaat gaan rather than to the modern urban idiom. Zeenat Begum's classical schooling is what makes the choice viable at all.
The Poetry

The monsoon lyric works by refusing to separate the outside from the inside: the clouds gather, and so do the tears; the season returns, and so does the memory. Madhok compresses that whole structure into the word phir — again — which does the work of establishing that this has happened before and will happen once more, giving the song a cyclical rather than a narrative shape. Calling the eyes matwale rather than sad is the sharper move: intoxication and weeping are both states of losing control of the face, and the lyric declines to say which one it means.
The Story

Dhamki (1945) was a suspense thriller made at Dalsukh M. Pancholi's Lahore studio, Pancholi Art Pictures, and directed by Ravindra Dave — Pancholi's nephew, who had joined the studio at fourteen as a production manager and was here working close to his first solo directorial credits. Ragini, born Shamshad Begum and a star since her 1940 Punjabi debut Dulla Bhatti, led the cast opposite Al Nasir, with Smriti Biswas, Kalavati, M. Ismail and a young Om Prakash in support. The Wikipedia record of 1945 Hindi releases classes the film as thriller noir; no detailed plot summary of it survives in accessible sources.
The Legacy

Dhamki is not part of the living Hindi film song repertoire — no print of the film circulates and its records are collectors' items rather than radio staples. Its lasting interest is documentary. Pandit Amarnath was dead by 1947 — the music of that year's Mirza Sahiban is credited to 'Late Pandit Amarnath' — so this is among the last complete scores he finished, and the composer who had discovered Zeenat Begum around 1937, when she was still a child, gave her the largest share of it. Within eighteen months of the film's release, Partition had scattered everyone involved across a new border.

Zeenat Begum was born at Malerkotla into a family of musicians and was discovered by Pandit Amarnath around 1937, when she was still a child; the Dhamki songs she sings are the work of a composer recording a singer he had found himself.

The Hindi Film Geet Kosh records Dhamki's censor certificate as Bombay/32925, dated 18 December 1945, which is why Indian catalogues list it as a 1945 release; the Pakistan Film Magazine archive records its Lahore premiere at the Palace cinema on Thursday, 7 March 1946. Certified in one year and shown in the next, the film carries two different years depending on which side of the later border kept the record.

The film's leading lady, credited simply as Ragini, was born Shamshad Begum (22 October 1924 - 27 February 2007) and is not the playback singer of the same name. She became a star with her 1940 Punjabi debut Dulla Bhatti, and Wikipedia records her as the highest-paid actress of her time in the 1940s.
