Biography

Zahur Raja (also spelled Zahoor Raja) was born on 7 July 1918 in Abbottabad, British India, and educated at Government Gordon College, Rawalpindi, where a teacher who noticed his talent for dramatic performance encouraged him toward films. He became one of Hindi cinema's multi-hyphenate figures of the late 1930s and 1940s, working as an actor, playback-era singer, music director, writer and director.

He broke into the industry working as an assistant to established directors in the late 1930s, gaining his first notice through the Punjabi film Mirza Sahiban (1939). He made his debut as a singer in Pooja (1940) and went on to act in films such as Sikandar (1941), Sewa (1942), Mazaaq (1943, opposite Pahari Sanyal), Panchhi (1944), Ghazal (1945) and Anmol Ghadi (1946). In 1942 he turned director with Badal for Eastern Pictures, and later founded his own production banner, Raja Movietone.

After Partition, Zahur Raja relocated to Lahore in Pakistan around 1950, where he continued directing films including Jihad, Ghazi Bin Abbas and Gulfarosh (1961), Diwana (1964) and Baghi Sardar (1966), remaining active in Pakistani cinema into the late 1960s. He died on 28 August 1993 in Lahore, Pakistan, at the age of 75.
