Biography

Zia Sarhadi, born Fazl-e-Qadir Sethi in 1914 in Peshawar, was a screenwriter, lyricist, and director who worked in Hindi cinema during the Golden Age of Indian film. He moved to Bombay in the early 1930s and began his career at the East India Film Company in Calcutta before joining Sagar Movietone in 1934, where he worked as a writer and lyricist.

As a lyricist, Sarhadi wrote the lyrics, story, screenplay, and dialogue for Manmohan (1936), and contributed to the screenplay, dialogue, and songs of Mehboob Khan's Deccan Queen (1936); he also wrote dialogue for Bahen (1941) and Baiju Bawra (1952). He later moved into direction, helming Hum Log (1951) and the neo-realist Footpath (1953), starring Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari, and is also said to have served as an uncredited script consultant on Mother India (1957).

Known as an "unaffiliated Marxist," Sarhadi's work often engaged with the social issues of his time. After Partition, he relocated to Pakistan, where he directed a single film, Rahguzar (1960), before largely withdrawing from filmmaking amid censorship pressures. He died on 27 January 1997 in Karachi.
